My Opinion: Percy Jackson - The Sea Of Monsters By Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters is the second book in the series, and it’s even more exciting than the first one! This time, Percy and his friends go on a dangerous journey to save their camp and find something called the Golden Fleece. Oh, and they have to sail through the Sea of Monsters (which is basically the Bermuda Triangle) to do it!

Percy’s life seems pretty normal at first. He’s back at school and has this funny new friend, Tyson, who’s super tall, kinda weird, but really nice. Then, everything goes crazy when a bunch of evil, man-eating giants attack their gym class. Percy fights them off with Annabeth’s help, and they all run back to Camp Half-Blood.
When they get to camp, things are a mess. Someone poisoned the magical tree that protects Camp Half-Blood, and now monsters can attack anytime. The only way to fix the tree is to find the Golden Fleece, a magical object that can heal anything. But there’s a catch—it’s in the Sea of Monsters, a super dangerous place full of crazy creatures.
Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson set out to find the Golden Fleece, which is the only thing that can heal Camp Half-Blood’s magical tree. The journey takes them through the Sea of Monsters (a.k.a. the Bermuda Triangle), and they face tons of dangers along the way.
Before the quest begins, Hermes, the god of messengers, helps Percy by giving him magical items: A thermos filled with powerful winds that can create a storm. Vitamins that can heal injuries. And a bag full of Greek money, normal money, spare clothes, food and basically everything else you need to go on a journey. Hermes also gives Percy some family advice, which sticks with him throughout the quest—especially as he learns to accept Tyson as his half-brother.
Tyson
Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson stumble upon a mysterious cruise ship called the Princess Andromeda. At first, it seems fancy and luxurious, but they quickly realize it’s full of monsters working for Luke. Luke, Percy’s former friend, uses the ship as his base and works to bring the Titan Kronos back to life. Percy learns that Luke wants to steal the Golden Fleece, too—but for evil reasons. He plans to use its power to speed up Kronos’ return. Percy and his friends are captured but managed to escape by stealing a lifeboat and using the magical thermos to create a massive storm that throws off the monsters.
Going towards The Princess Andromeda
After Clarisse and her warship, the CSS Birmingham, save the group from the hydra, Clarisse reluctantly lets Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson join her crew. The ship, which is powered by undead Confederate soldiers, is strong but not invincible.
Scylla & Charybdis |
As they sail toward the Sea of Monsters, they encounter Scylla and Charybdis, two ancient sea monsters guarding the entrance. Charybdis creates a massive whirlpool, pulling the ship closer and closer to its destruction. At the same time, Scylla, a giant monster with multiple heads, attacks the ship from above, snatching crew members right off the deck.
The ship starts taking heavy damage. Tyson, being a Cyclops, is strong and used to fire and explosions. He stays in the engine room, trying to keep the ship running and protect everyone. However, the CSS Birmingham is overwhelmed by Charybdis’ whirlpool and Scylla’s attack. Just as the ship is about to be completely destroyed, a massive explosion rocks the engine room.
Clarisse - Are's Daughter
This moment is a turning point for Percy emotionally. He feels guilty for not always being kind to Tyson and regrets not appreciating him more. It’s also a reminder of how dangerous their quest is and how high the stakes are. Tyson's loss weighs heavily on Percy as they continue their journey.
Sirens' Singing
As they journey deeper into the Sea of Monsters, Annabeth decides she wants to listen to the Sirens. The Sirens are magical creatures whose song reveals your deepest desires, but it’s super dangerous because it can make you go crazy or drown. Annabeth insists on listening because she thinks she’ll learn something important about herself. Percy ties her to the mast of their ship to keep her safe, but Annabeth manages to escape anyway. Percy dives into the water to save her just in time. Annabeth later admits that the Sirens showed her a vision of her deepest wish: to rebuild Olympus and prove her worth to her mother, Athena.
Polyphemus
Percy and Annabeth make it to the island where the Golden Fleece is guarded by Polyphemus, a giant Cyclops. Polyphemus has captured Grover, who’s pretending to be a female Cyclops to avoid getting eaten (it’s funny but also a little disturbing). The group tricks Polyphemus and manages to steal the Golden Fleece, but not without a tough fight. Polyphemus chases them, and it’s only thanks to teamwork and cleverness that they escape.

This book has everything: action, monsters, humour, and even some emotional moments. Percy learns to accept Tyson as his brother and realizes how important family and friends are. Plus, the ending sets up a huge twist for the next book. If you liked the first book, you’ll love this one!
